Thailand Dependant Visas & Family Relocation to Phuket

Bring your family to Phuket the right way. We match each member to the correct dependent visa, handle the marriage and birth certificate legalization, guide your school choice, and keep every stay compliant long after you arrive.

Which family situation sounds like yours?

Your family’s visa follows the main applicant’s visa. Pick the case that fits and read the full breakdown below.

Accompanying a working spouse or a student

Your partner works in Thailand, or your child studies here, and the rest of the family joins on a Non O dependant visa.

High net worth and executive families

The main earner holds a 10 year LTR, and the spouse and children are added as dependants under the same long term.

Long stay investor families

You want a settled, multi year base in Phuket without local work. A Thailand Privilege family membership covers everyone.

The dependant visa matrix

All three family routes side by side on what matters: how long you stay, who counts as family, the money or insurance bar, and whether anyone can work or study.

Each family route, in full

Route A — Non O Dependant Visa

For the family of a foreigner who works in Thailand, or the parent of a child studying here.

This is the standard family visa. When one parent holds a Non B work visa, or a child is enrolled in school, the rest of the family stays on a Non O dependant visa tied to that main holder. It renews each year alongside the primary visa, and the dependant relationship has to be proven with legalized certificates.

What is required

How it works

The dependant spouse may not work

A Non O dependant visa gives the right to live in Thailand, not to earn here. A spouse who wants to work needs their own Non B and work permit, or an LTR. A parent whose child studies here can instead take a Guardian Non O visa, covered in the schooling section below.

Route B — LTR Dependant Visa

For the family of a Long Term Resident visa holder.

When the main earner qualifies for the 10 year LTR, the whole family comes along on the same long term. It is the most comfortable family option: a decade of residency, yearly reporting instead of every 90 days, free entry and exit without a separate permit, and recognition of same sex spouses.

Who can be included

The bar per dependant

The family route with the least friction

Children on an LTR dependant visa study without touching an ED visa, the family reports only once a year, and a dependant spouse can still apply for their own digital work permit later if they take qualifying work.

Route C — Thailand Privilege Family Packages

For families who want a long, settled base in Phuket without needing to work here.

Thailand Privilege, formerly the Elite Visa, is a paid membership granting a long stay privilege visa with concierge service and fast track at the airport. There is no income test and no age limit, which makes it popular with investor families and parents under 50. Family members are added for a per person fee, and no one is asked for local financial reporting.

What the family gets

Good to know

A membership, not a work visa

Privilege buys certainty of stay and convenience, not the right to earn in Thailand. If a parent later needs to work, pair it with a Non B and work permit, or move that parent to an LTR.

Phuket international schooling & neighborhood guide

For most families the school comes first and the home follows it. Phuket has a strong cluster of international schools, and the island splits neatly into family areas built around them.

Leading international schools

HeadStart International School

Two campuses, one near Laguna in Cherngtalay and one at Chaofah toward Phuket Town. A popular, well established choice on the west coast. British curriculum, IGCSE and A Levels.

British International School, Phuket (BISP)

The island’s flagship, with renowned sports academies and boarding. The academic anchor of Koh Kaew near Phuket Town. British curriculum and IB Diploma.

UWC Thailand (UWCT)

A mission driven school in the greener north, known for mindfulness, outdoor learning and a close community feel. Full IB: PYP, MYP and DP.

Berda Claude International School (BCIS)

Serves the established southern community with a bilingual offering, a natural fit for French speaking and European families. French national and English streams.

Kajonkiet International School (KIS)

A west coast option close to the Laguna and Bang Tao families, convenient for the Cherngtalay lifestyle hub. British curriculum.

We shortlist for you

Tell us ages, budget and curriculum preference and we will line up tours, check intake availability and match the area to the school.

School intake timing drives everything

Popular year groups fill early, and the main intake follows the August academic year, with a second entry point around January. Start school applications well before you need the visas, because the school offer and enrolment letter are what unlock the child’s ED visa and a parent’s guardian visa.

From dependant visa to school place: the ED and Guardian route

A younger child can often attend school on a family dependant visa. As they move into formal, full time study, many schools ask the child to hold a student ED visa, which the school sponsors. When a child studies on an ED visa, one parent can hold a Guardian Non O visa to stay with them, usually supported by funds in a Thai bank. We coordinate the school letter, the child’s ED visa and the parent’s guardian visa so the timelines line up.

Family neighborhood clusters

Cherngtalay & Bang Tao

The west coast lifestyle hub near HeadStart and KIS. Beaches, Laguna, Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket, with the widest choice of family villas.

Koh Kaew

The academic core around BISP, handy for Phuket Town, Central and the hospitals. Convenient and central for daily school runs.

Thalang

Greener and calmer in the north near UWC, with more space and land. Suits families who want wellness, sport and room to breathe.

Rawai & Chalong

An established year round community in the south near BCIS, with marinas, markets and a long settled expat family scene.

Family compliance & document authentication

Family visas live or die on documents. A marriage or birth certificate has to be authenticated and translated correctly, and the family’s stay carries ongoing duties once you arrive.

Legalization & translation

Ongoing obligations

Frequently asked questions

Yes. As of 2026 Thailand recognizes same sex marriage, and the LTR visa explicitly includes same sex spouses as dependants. We confirm how your marriage certificate should be legalized so it is accepted for the family application.

Not on a dependant visa itself. A spouse on a Non O dependant visa may not work. To earn legally they need their own Non B and work permit, or an LTR, and an LTR dependant spouse can later apply for their own digital work permit if they take qualifying work.

Younger children can often attend on a family dependant visa, but as they enter formal full time study most schools ask the child to hold a student ED visa, which the school sponsors. We time the school enrolment letter and the ED visa so there is no gap in status.

When a child studies on an ED visa, one parent can hold a Guardian Non O visa to remain with them, usually supported by funds held in a Thai bank. We coordinate the school letter, the child’s ED visa and the parent’s guardian visa together.

Dependant visas cover children under 20, so once a child reaches that age they no longer qualify as a dependant. They move to their own basis of stay, such as a student ED visa, a work route or a Privilege membership. We plan this transition before the birthday so the young adult never falls out of status.
